The famous hacker, Pod2g has been well known in the jailbreak community for his work on jailbreak exploits including jailbreaking iOS 5.1.1 as well as previous firmwares. We have just recently learnt that he is currently working on something slightly different yet very exciting too. He is working on what is a dream come true to many of us which is hacking the iPhone 4S baseband!
The news of Pod2g working on hacking the iPhone 4S baseband has reached us through tweets from both Pod2g as well as MuscleNerd. Earlier in the day, we learnt from a conversation between the two hackers that neither Pod2g nor anyone else was working on an Apple TV 3 jailbreak. Then later in the same conversation Pod2g mentioned that he fund a baseband exploit. These were his exact words:
“As some have found, I am playing with the baseband. Already found a non exploitable DoS. I hope I can find more stuff. “
However, iClarified pointed out that despite the fact that Pod2g found an exploit is good news, something may be standing in his way. They reported:
“His effort to hack the baseband is being performed from the network side (as opposed to the from within the iPhone) with help from a USRP N210 software radio.
Unfortunately, even if he is successful, any exploit found would need to be triggerable from the main app CPU side to be used in a software unlock.”
You are probably wondering “If what Pod2g’s work on the iPhone 5 is totally pointless, then why is he going forward with all this?” Well, there is something in there (aside from the experience of course)! A $100,000 reward from TippingPoint DVLabs Pwn2Own competition in September may be a good enough drive to motivate Pod2g. Don’t you think?
